To fill or not to fill.....

When I first got my Savage, I filled my tank w/ the bike leaning on the side stand, so when I stood it up, the tank was overfilled and gas spooged out of the cap onto my pants leg as soon as I left the gas station. I had to drain gas into a soda bottle to keep it from spooging. I have been told that this shouldn't have happened because the cap should be sealed, but I believe the tank vents thru the cap, since I don't see any other place for it to vent. Now I'm paranoid about overfilling so I end up w/ a shorter range on each tank (80 miles or so till reserve). The manual says not to fill above the neck of the fill tube but that seems to be a lot lower than it can be. I would like to fill the tank to the tippy top for those longer rides like my friend does w/ his Harley, and was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience.
